Emory Financial Planning Certificate Program Course Topics


The program curriculum includes: personal financial planning, retirement planning, estate planning, tax planning, insurance, and investments, and focuses on all 89 subtopics necessary to successfully pass the CFP® Exam.

Fundamentals of Financial Planning:  Providing a comprehensive overview of the financial planning process, this course emphasizes goal and priority setting, data gathering and implementing a financial plan. Topics include time value of money concepts, financial calculator protocol, legal environment, financial analysis and ethical and professional considerations in financial planning. 

Insurance Planning: This course covers the various aspects of life, disability, and medical insurance, as well as the principles of risk management. Topics include an introduction to life insurance, insurance needs, legal aspects, types of life insurance, annuities, death benefits, buy-sell agreements, charitable uses, life insurance trusts, and pension maximization. 

Investment Planning: In this course, students will learn how to construct and manage various investment vehicles appropriate to a client’s needs. Topics include analysis of investment alternatives in a risk-return framework, emphasis on selection, timing and diversification techniques; cash and cash equivalents, U.S. government securities, bonds, stocks, real estate, asset-backed securities, mutual funds.

Taxation Planning:  This course emphasizes the concepts and methods of determining tax liability for individuals and ways to efficiently manage a client’s taxes.  Topics include income and deductions, alternative minimum tax planning, stock option planning, charitable planning, changing accounting methods, like-kind exchanges, retirement income planning, income tax law fundamentals, tax compliance, tax calculations, tax accounting, characteristics and income taxation of business entities, alternative minimum tax, charitable contributions and deductions.

Retirement Planning and Employee Benefits: In this course, students will learn how to effectively plan, implement and monitor personal and business-sponsored retirement plans. Topics include government benefits, IRAs, ERISA and tax rules for qualified plans, defined benefit plans, defined contribution plans, other employer retirement plans, cash compensation, equity options, cafeteria plans, life insurance plans, health coverage, disability, and fringe benefits.

Estate Planning: Techniques will be covered in this course which minimize the impact of state and federal taxes on transfers of wealth. Topics include the practice of estate planning, ownership and transfer of property, taxes, gifts, trusts, life insurance, charitable giving, intra-family and other business transfers techniques, incapacity planning, and valuation issues.

Financial Planning Case Studies: This course will present case studies which require students to apply knowledge from the financial planning core courses in situations much like the real life situations they will face in the financial planning practice. These cases and questions are important for testing a candidate’s ability to analyze facts, to evaluate alternatives and to synthesize and apply knowledge in differing circumstances.


Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. owns the certification marks CFP® and CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER in the U.S., which it awards to individuals who successfully complete CFP Board's initial and ongoing certification requirements.
