Emory Certificates in Foreign Language Proficiency Program Overview

'Language and communication are at the heart of the human experience. The United States must educate students who are equipped linguistically and culturally to communicate successfully in a pluralistic American society and abroad. This imperative envisions a future in which ALL students will develop and maintain proficiency in English and at least one other language, modern or classical.'

How does the program work?
The core required courses build your foundational knowledge of the language and the elective courses expand your language skills and include cultural studies to round out your certificate program. Students will work with an experienced language instructor, as a learning partner, from the course inception through the capstone. Core and elective courses are offered throughout the year for convenient scheduling and you have 18 months to complete the program. Upon completion of all coursework, students will complete a capstone course to prepare them for the proficiency exam. The proficiency exam is based on criteria set by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) which is the only national organization dedicated to the improvement and expansion of the teaching and learning of all languages at all levels of instruction. Credit for previous courses may apply.
