History of Photography *NEW*
Laszlo Moholy-Nagy said presciently in 1936 “…a knowledge of photography is just as important as that of the alphabet. The illiterate of the future will be ignorant of the use of the camera and pen alike.” In today’s image driven society those words have taken on even greater meaning. This lecture/discussion class will take students from the beginning of the medium’s inception in the early 1800’s to the innovative images being made across the globe today. The emphasis of this course will be on fine art, but the instructor will touch on other aspects of the medium, such as photojournalism and advertising. The first session will focus on the invention of photography and the medium’s struggle for legitimacy in the art world. The second session will address the work of post War photographers with a special emphasis on living masters such as Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, Cindy Sherman, Jeff Wall and many more.
